Minister Devananda Appeal to International Community on Death Threat to VC Jaffna
Colombo, 18 April, (Asiantribune.com): Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare and Secretary General of EPDP, Douglas Devananda, MP, has appealed to the Co-chair and the Diplomatic Community about the seriousness of the death threat issued on Prof. S.R.H. Hoole, the Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna and to the Council Members who voted in favour of his election, by the LTTE and its frontal organizations.
He has called on the International Community to take strong measures to ensure the removal of terror as a weapon by the LTTE and its frontal organizations to undermine the lawful appointment to the post of Vice Chancellor and to save the voices of democracy in the North and East. The full text of his appeal is as follows:
"I wish to bring to your (Your Excellency's) kind notice the seriousness of death threat issued on Prof. S.R.H. Hoole, the Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna and to the Council Members who voted in favour of his election, by the LTTE and its frontal organizations.

Minister Devananda Appeal to International Community
In these days in Lanka it is very hard to say who is killing who?
There are so many armed groups and sometime kill their own people to make a point to international community.
-SLA
-SLA's intelligence group
-LTTE
-LTTE's peoples group
-Epdp group
-Karuna group
-Plote group
-Jvp group
- ......
If we have only one group, that's the best.
If we have two groups, maybe we can manage.
But, having more than two groups, it's hell.

LTTE has never made any threat. Mr. Thamilselvan had only strongly objected to the appointment of Prof. Hoole to the post of Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University with the Norwegian Peace Envoys.
However, it has fallen much below its once exalted standards up to 1980 and it pains every heart to see the University not rising to its full potential.
What standards is he talking about? It was only inaugurated on October 06, 1974. History of 6 years. Huh?
As Varathan said, It was managed by Prof. Thurairajah in late 80s and early 90s.
The Faculty of Medicine was established only on 07th August 1978
This guy has no clue what he is talking about.
This so-called minister has all the proof that Mr. Wijayarooban made the threat. He is a minister and he also believes the people do not support LTTE. Jaffna still under army occupation. No LTTE members in Jaffna. Still though he is begging international community for help. (Words deleted. No one can curse another. Moderator)
He and other ministers have witnessed the TNA parlimentarians carry already prepared placards condemning the murder of Vigneswaran as per his interview to AT. In any other country that will trigger a full investigation on those MPs. But in Sri Lanka, They will just adjourn the parliment and give interviews.
If this appoinment is purely based on his qualification, the reaction would be different. But this is a political move (Highly speculative and baseless - Words deleted - Moderator)
Where was this minister when Jaffna University VC, lecturers and students were attacked by SLA?

This is what happen when people holding key positions (teachers, professors, military, religious etc.) get involved or have part-time job in some political organization.
Now their prime job becomes questionable because of their involvement in politics.

If LTTE and Raguna like people who talk big time tamil nationalism should leave Jaffna university to academics and the govt. who is providing funds to it.
They talk BS nationalism from the other side, and students want to control which teachers head the university.
If LTTE leave it to the Academics, then govt. minimizes its grip.
I think Prof Hoole should be asked to go to another and open an Enineering Faculty/deparment.
Minister Devananda Appeal to International Community on Deal
Here it comes a light. The day it was reported that Mr. Thamilselvan had strongly objected to the appointment of Prof. Hoole to the post of Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University with the Norwegian Peace Envoys, I predicted the next step would be to threaten him with his life if he steps into the university. This has happened now. What a peace loving student leader might be the Mr. Vijayarooban to threaten Prof. Hoole with assault if he steps into the university? I think he is acting on the strength of the LTTE. He might be also upset of his plans to make the Jaffna University of a Breading Ground for terrorism. As a well known academic and an administrator, Mr. Vijayarooban’s plans outside the scope of academic studies would be certainly hampered by the appointment of the Prof. Hoole to the University.
I certainly agree with what Mr. Varathan has to say above. Prof. Thurairajah might have been a really good Vice Chancellor for the Jaffna University in the 1980’s. But there is also the acceptable comment of that this standard had gone down drastically with this tragic war in the late 1980’s, 1990’s and early part of this decade. There fore it is time to bring this back to the previously set standards for the benefit of the Tamil community. I can certainly guarantee that Prof. Hoole is of this caliber. Even late Prof. Thurairajah’s daughter might be able to certify this fact as she would have also studied under Prof. Hoole at Peradeniya Engineering Faculty. If I am not mistaken she would have been a student of the faculty at the time Prof. Hoole teaching in the same faculty.
It’s time to forget petty politics of who had appointed the VC but to reap the benefits of such an academic could give to the Tamil community. Just think of how many Professors and other academics who hold Msc, PhD have left this country for better pastures on foreign countries. Are students like Mr. Vijayarooban trying to chase away the remaining? I am sure that Mr. Vijayarooban might be not that interested in getting an academic qualification and applying for a good job. He might already have a job with the LTTE.
The University of Jaffna is considered by the Tamil community as a National University and the seat of high Tamil culture and learning. However, it has fallen much below its once exalted standards up to 1980
Honerable minister either forgot or deliberatly hiding the fact that this university was once managed by world renoved man Prof. Thurairajah. He managed this University only in late 80s and early 90s and the minister's commnets are hightly irrational unless he has personal vandetta with Prof. Thurairaja (He has his own theorum and not many people have this capacity in the current accademic arena)
I willl re quote my earlier post
I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every the careless words you utter; from your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." (Jesus as quoted by Matthew 12:36-37)

When we called for comment for the news item, “Young Muslim Trader shot and killed in Jaffna,” you came up with almost the irrelevant comment on Sun Apr 16, 2006.
We give below our observations regarding that comment.
”It seems that you are coming up with irrelevant arguments about the murder of a Muslim trader. There is no relevancy to the Muslim man’s murder and the UTHR (J) report. Almost illogical but it is clearly visible your political ploy to attack someone you do not like. Kindly refrain from treading beyond what is called for comments.
