Last Wednesday (March 4, 2020) the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) convened a hearing about the intent and impact of India’s amended Citizenship laws and the Rohingya Muslims’ issue in Myanmar to help develop policy recommendations for the US government in response to the issues. Members of the commission along with an invited panel of experts expressed concern over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), saying that it could result in the “wide-scale disenfranchisement” of Muslims in the country.

A meeting was held to address the allegations raised by the local fishermen on the exporters that they are not paid the right price for their fish since recently, pointing at some companies who are operating large vessels on foreign joint venture which is 100% in accordance with EU guidelines. They wanted all these licenses to be revoked as they falsely believe that this is the cause that the price of fish is falling time to time.

Alcohol Abuse In Sri Lanka: Grave Consequences

About 9 million or an estimated 40% of the population of Sri Lanka consume alcohol and 99% of them are males. Those consuming alcohol daily amount to more than 4 million. The alcohol market includes pure alcohol such as hard liquor mainly arrack and beer and illicit liquor or kasippu. Illicit alcohol accounts for most of the alcohol consumed in the country. Studies done in 2013 reveal that illicit alcohol or kasippu accounts for as much as 65% of the total volume of alcohol consumed in Sri Lanka.
