The UN Determination Relating to Julian Assange and Some Pertinent Lessons for Sri Lanka

The UN working group on arbitrary detention has determined that Mr Julian Assange, who has been holed up in the Equadoran Embassy in London as a political refugee for almost four years, was being subject to arbitrary detention by the United Kingdom. The working group said, in addition, that he should be entitled to compensation for being deprived of his freedom of movement. Countries, such as the UK, which assume the elevated role of white hatted human rights enforcers, could have been expected to take this determination seriously

US presidency 2016: Sanders outsmarts Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire!

The countdown seems to have begun for both Democrats and republicans for the forthcoming US presidency poll. In Democratic party all-powerful former Secretary of State Mrs. Clinton is seen running way behind her fellow candidate Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who calls himself a “democratic socialist”. Whether or not he indeed is a socialist remains to be seen but that would be a difference making concern if only Sanders makes to the presidency.

BJP Loves To Invite Trouble!

It makes little sense for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to go on inviting trouble and still hope to make India ‘Congress-Mukt’, or at least decimate most of the forces opposed to it. While the storm over the suicide of a Dalit student of Hyderabad Central University, Rohith Vemula, was still raging and rapidly spreading to all corners of the country, the Modi government decided to impose President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh, leaving the room open for trenchant criticism from all parties and awkward queries by the court.

Redefining the Mission of EROS.

Settlement to the ethnic problem continues to evade Sri Lanka. As far as Tamil people are concerned, a peaceful live in their homeland is not possible without a settlement to the ethnic conflict. Thirteenth Amendment has been a half backed solution that satisfies neither the Tamils nor the Sinhalese. Without a comprehensive settlement either permanent peace or reconciliation between the two communities would be possible.
