President Mohamed Nasheed said his government will not tolerate any threats against the media after two disturbing incidents of media battering were reported on Monday.
The Nasheed administration is releasing criminals whilst his party is blocking private televisions from reporting, and then, the President pledges to safeguard the press, the Maldives Journalist Association said urging Nasheed to match his words with action.
A group of prominent Maldivian journalists are Colombo bound early next week to seek international support to save the country’s deteriorating media freedom.
The Maldives Association of Judges has fired a letter to the Chief Judge, Abdulla Saeed, condemning his “lack of action or words against people who are trying to influence the judiciary.”
Comparing the Nasheed administration with that of the previous Gayoom regime, the United States has said the former shows greater commitment in addressing the country’s challenges.
Saying that the Maldives too is affected by jihadi terrorism amongst many others in the region, India’s Home Minister P. Chidambaram urged South Asia to end this menace jointly.
The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) told the ruling MDP that it should know “pluralism is the essence of democracy” after the party blocked the opposition-leaning Dhi TV from covering a MDP meeting.
The Opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party regained its lost status on Wednesday becoming the largest political party in the Maldives again, according to the latest figures released by the Elections Commission.
Midst a tight race between the ruling MDP and the opposition DRP to outnumber each others membership, the Elections Commission is set to release an update on the new figures tomorrow.
