Britain, which recently reduced aid to Sri Lanka, a South Asian nation which is battling a home-grown terrorist movement to safeguard her territorial integrity, sovereignty and the democratic system, citing human rights violations is being accused of contemplating transferring combat military hardware to Myanmar (Burma) a country governed by a military regime which has a widely documented record of serious human rights violations.

Father of the convicted Muslim teenage girl to appeal to parents of the dead baby to save her from being beheaded

Mohamed Sultan Nafeek the father of the 19 year old Sri Lankan girl, who is sentenced to be beheaded in Saudi Arabia said in Colombo that he was scheduled to fly on June 16 to the desert kingdom to appeal to the parents of the baby boy who died while the convicted teenager was bottle feeding him. "I will ask them to pardon my daughter for the sake of Allah, it was not her intention to kill," Sultan Nafeek said. Under Saudi Arabian law the victim’s family is entitled to pardon an accused of a crime and spare the Life from being beheaded.

GVG puts a new spin on Indian Presidential election

Former Election Commissioner of India, G V G Krishna Murthy has put a 'legal' spin on the decision of AIADMK and eight regional parties in the Third Front to 'abstain' from voting in the Presidential election, saying 'their public declaration has vitiated the very poll process.' "No member of a party will dare to go against the wishes or directions of the leadership. So, in a sense the public announcement of the decision to abstain (from voting by the Third Front parties) is a threat. It is an intimidation. It invites section 18(2) of the President and Vice President Act, 1952", GVG, opines.

Sri Lanka's displaced need greater assistance, urges un refugee official

A senior United Nations refugee agency official has urged the Sri Lankan Government to step up its efforts to aid the displaced by allocating land and allowing them to move out of welfare centres they have been living in for over two decades. Judy Cheng-Hopkins, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations of the United Nations High Commission foe Refugees, met with top Sri Lankan officials this week to discuss the Government's return programme in the east of the South Asian country. She called on the Sri Lankan government to double its efforts to allocate land to displaced people and allow them to move out of the welfare centres they have been living in for more than two decades.

Share Market Further looses ground

HNB Stockbrokers in their weekly review indicated that the fall in the market was yet again witnessed this week with the two indices reaching it’s lowest for the year During the first three days All Share Price Index (ASPI) fell by 52.11 points while Milanka Price Index (MPI) had a bigger fall of 78.08 points. On Thursday the market picked up slightly but once again dropped on Friday closing the week at the year’s lowest for ASPI & MPI of 2463.9 & 3400.9 points respectively. Overall the two indices dropped by 2.38 percent & 2.87 percent respectively, compared to last week’s closing levels.

Delay in issuing visas to Sri Lankan team to enter Saudi a puzzle

Saudi Arabian Embassy in Sri Lanka has so far not issued the necessary visa's for the Sri Lankan team, including the Deputy Foreign Minister, to enter Saudi Arabia and make representations on behalf of the 19-year -old Sri Lankan House maid, Rizana Nafeek, sentenced to beheading. The visa applications were made a week ago and the delay is yet to be explained. The father and mother of the condemned teenage housemaid is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia to appeal in person for clemency from Mr & Mrs Naif Jiziyan Khalaf Al Otaibi, the father and mother of the deceased 4-month-old boy who was alleged to have been killed by the Sri Lanka Housemaid. The Sri Lankan team due to leave for Saudi Arabia is led by Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Bhaila.
