More than ever before, the focus will be on Anura Bandaranaike. As the new Foreign Minister he steps into a pair of big boots. The right one was worn by his father, S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, whose vast and intimate knowledge foreign affairs helped him to steer the fledgling nation into the non-alignment movement with a passion to assert Sri Lanka’s independence. Like most anti-colonial contemporaries of his time he displayed a fierce sense of independent, amounting to even superiority over his Western counterparts. It is something he learnt at Oxford. 11 Pakistanis released from Iraqi kidnappers

India’s northeastern states particularly Assam and Tripura have put the police on high alert along the border with Bangladesh. While Tripura has a ‘volatile border’ with Bangladesh, Assam’s 272-km long land border and 90-km long river border has been relatively peaceful.

Anura Bandaranaike new Foreign Minister

Minister Anura Bandaranaike took his oaths as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs before President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday evening.
